Ambleside Ward of Lakes Parish HNS 2011

The Survey: 1911 survey forms were delivered by post to all the dwellings (including second homes and holiday lets) and businesses within the Ambleside Ward of the Lakes parish (100%), with a return date of 21st November 2011.  414 households returned their completed forms.  This is a return rate of 21.66% which is below the average of 30% return rate for CRHT surveys in Cumbria since 2006, but is comparable to surveys done in the larger settlements. The response rate is  likely to have been influenced by the high level of non-main residences in the Ambleside Ward, which is likely to be around 30% as the overall situation for the Lakes parish is 37% non-main residences (from SLDC Council Tax figures April 2012) with some wards such as Langdale being at a much higher level. 44 of the responses were from second homes or holiday lets. Of the returned forms there were 68 responses, saying that either the whole household or someone living within the household, wished to move within the parish in the next 5 years. Some had multiple needs, so the overall number of households assessed was 75.

Housing Need: Of the 75 existing or future households indicating a housing need, 40 households were identified as in need of affordable housing in Ambleside Ward within next 5 years.

The remaining 35 responses did not fit the Lake District National Park’s criteria for being in need of affordable within the parish in the next 5 years, though one was in need but stated they were planning to move elsewhere in South Lakeland. 6 households may be eligible for local housing under the LDNPA policies, 1 of whom wanted to satisfy their need by self-build in Grasmere. There were also 3 possible emergent households who may be in need of affordable housing in the next 5 years, but insufficient information had been given in the response to be able to assess their need.
